The
Golden One.
La
Dorée.

One solitaire, drawn live in front of you. Turn it in your hand, learn what makes a diamond sing, then make it yours, before you ever step into the shop.

01The cutLa taille

Light goes in.
Where does it go?
La lumière entre.
Où va-t-elle ?

Nature gives a diamond its colour and its clarity. The cut is the one thing a person gives it. Cut well, the light that enters the top bounces off the facets below and comes straight back to your eye. Cut too deep or too shallow, it leaks out of the bottom and the stone goes quiet.

02The colourLa couleur

The best colour
is no colour.
La plus belle couleur,
c’est aucune.

White diamonds are graded from D, as clear as water, down the alphabet as a warm tint creeps in. Most eyes can’t tell D from F in a ring. Most can see K beside it. Walk down the scale and watch the stone.

Every stone
was born somewhere.
Chaque pierre
est née quelque part.

Deep in the earth, a diamond grows around tiny crystals and feathers of its own. Clarity grades how many there are and how easily you see them. Below VS you need a loupe. Below SI, sometimes you don’t.

04The caratLe carat

A carat is a weight,
not a size.
Le carat est un poids,
pas une taille.

One carat is a fifth of a gram. Double the weight and the stone looks only about a quarter wider across, because it grows in every direction at once. That is why a well-cut 0.9 ct can face up bigger than a deep 1 ct.

In Egypt, Hathor was the goddess of love, of music and of gold. They called her the Golden One, and the Lady of Turquoise. We thought a jeweller could do worse.
